Reading an elevator schematic becomes much easier if you follow the electrical flow instead of trying to understand the whole drawing at once.

Step 1: Read the title block

Check:

Elevator model

Controller type

Voltage (230 V AC, 415 V AC, 24 V DC, etc.)

Drawing number and revision

Step 2: Understand the symbols

*️⃣Common symbols include:

*️⃣NO contact – Normally Open

*️⃣NC contact – Normally Closed

*️⃣Relay/Contactor coil

*️⃣Push button

*️⃣Limit switch

*️⃣Fuse

*️⃣Circuit breaker (MCB/MCCB)

*️⃣Motor

*️⃣Transformer

*️⃣Power supply (SMPS)

Step 3: Follow the power flow

Start from: Incoming Supply → Main Breaker → Contactor → Motor Drive (VVVF) → Motor → Brake

For the control circuit: Transformer/SMPS → Safety Circuit → Controller → Relay Outputs → Door Operator/Motor

Step 4: Read the safety circuit first

The safety chain usually includes:

*️⃣Door lock contacts

*️⃣Safety gear switch

*️⃣Overspeed governor switch

*️⃣Final limit switch

*️⃣Pit stop switch

*️⃣Top inspection switch

If any safety device opens, the elevator will not run.

Step 5: Read the control circuit

Look for:

Step 6: Trace one circuit at a time

For example, if the brake does not release:

1. Find the brake coil.

2. Trace backwards to the relay or contactor.

3. Continue back to the controller output.

4. Check the safety circuit supplying that output.
