Ever since Apple launched the IPhone Duo, the internet is debating the fold, hinge, crease, thickness, and who copied whom?
And I can’t help but wonder,
IF STEVE JOBS WERE LAUNCHING THE IPHONE DUO TODAY, WOULD WE BE LOOKING AT IT THE SAME WAY?
Would he have led with the Fold?
Probably not.
Samsung owns that conversation..has been for years.
The pitch wouldn’t have been about the fold. It would have been about what Apple uniquely did with the fold.
With Jobs it probably would have been about a reimagined iOS experience, hardware and software to “redefine what it means to use a foldable phone
It would have been about making us change the way we think about the IPhone today.
While making us suddenly wonder:
“How did we ever live with one screen?”
That was Jobs’ real strength.
He rarely invented the underlying technology.
- The smartphone existed before the iPhone.
- MP3 players existed before the iPod.
- Graphical interfaces existed before the Mac.
Steve Jobs just didn’t introduce products.
With every Apple product, he reframed existing technology so effectively that the old experience suddenly felt obsolete and irrelevant.
Because Apple has never been about the technology. It has always been about the experience
Apple did not invent a category.
Apple redefined it.
The technology is the how.
The story is the “why”
And when the “why” is clear, the product feels inevitable.
At Macworld 2008, Steve Jobs famously introduced the MacBook Air by pulling it out of a manila envelope.
So here’s the question I keep coming back to:
IF STEVE JOBS WERE LAUNCHING IPHONE DUO, WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN HIS STORY?
Not an envelope, obviously!
