OASIA HOTEL, SINGAPORE 🇸🇬
What if a skyscraper wasn’t designed to keep nature out, but instead became a giant structure for nature to grow across?
Standing approximately 190 metres above Singapore’s Tanjong Pagar district, Oasia Hotel Downtown is one of the most distinctive examples of tropical high rise architecture in the world.
Designed by WOHA, the tower replaces the conventional sealed glass skyscraper with a red aluminium façade, enormous open-air sky gardens and a living envelope that continues to change as vegetation grows across it.

The first thing you notice is the extraordinary red façade.
Rather than covering the building with conventional curtain walling, WOHA created a permeable red aluminium mesh envelope that acts as a giant trellis.
Across it grow 21 species of climbing plants.
The intention wasn’t simply to place landscaping around a skyscraper.
The skyscraper itself becomes part of the landscape.
As the plants mature, sections of the red structure progressively disappear behind vegetation, creating habitats for birds and insects while continually changing the appearance of the tower.
Perhaps the most extraordinary statistic is the project’s reported Green Plot Ratio of approximately 1,100%.
Through extensive vertical planting, terraces and sky gardens, the development provides many times the greenery contained within its original site footprint.
It’s an interesting response to one of the fundamental problems facing dense cities. If there isn’t enough space to create nature horizontally, can we create it vertically?
