🤖 AI is a hot topic at the moment… but what does that actually mean for an Occupational Health & Safety professional?
When we hear Artificial Intelligence, the conversation often focuses on productivity, automation and how AI might change the way we work.
But from an Occupational Health & Safety perspective, there’s another question we need to be asking:
👉 How does AI change the risks people are exposed to at work?
AI has the potential to become an incredibly powerful tool for H&S professionals.
It could help us:
🔹 Analyse incident and near-miss data
🔹 Identify emerging trends and recurring hazards
🔹 Support risk assessment and safety planning
🔹 Improve inspection and audit processes
🔹 Identify patterns that humans may overlook
🔹 Support predictive maintenance and preventative action
🔹 Turn lessons learned into meaningful safety improvements
But there is another side to the conversation.
What happens when AI gets it wrong?
Could over-reliance on AI lead to automation bias?
Could workers become less vigilant because they trust the technology?
Are we considering the impact AI may have on workload, stress, autonomy and mental health?
And perhaps most importantly…
Who is challenging the AI?
As safety professionals, our role isn’t simply to accept what technology tells us. Our role is to question, challenge, verify and apply professional judgement.
AI shouldn’t replace competent safety professionals.
Used responsibly, it could enhance our ability to protect people.
The future of H&S may not be about AI versus people.
It could be about AI + human expertise.
💠So, as H&S professionals, are we ready to embrace AI — while making sure we don’t lose the human element of safety?
