Thanks to Don Williamson & Team: I spent Wednesday at the evOak HR Conference wrestling with one Big-Q: How do we create more hope, more leaders, and more human-centered organizations in an AI-powered world? At the evOak Conference, a couple of messages stayed with me long after the sessions ended: Our job as leaders is to make ourselves obsolete. Not because we become irrelevant, but because we’ve built systems, developed people, and created future leaders who can thrive without us. Thanks to Don Williamson & Team: I spent Wednesday at the evOak HR Conference wrestling with one Big-Q: How do we create more hope, more leaders, and more human-centered organizations in an AI-powered world?

At the evOak Conference, a couple of messages stayed with me long after the sessions ended:

Our job as leaders is to make ourselves obsolete.

Not because we become irrelevant, but because we’ve built systems, developed people, and created future leaders who can thrive without us. That idea, shared by speaker Hamza Khan, challenged me to think differently about leadership in the age of AI.

We’re entering a world where we have:

🔹 God-like technology

🔹 Primitive brains

🔹 Medieval organizations

The question isn’t whether AI will change work. It already is.

The real question is: Will we use technology to amplify human potential, or simply automate human activity?

One concept that resonated deeply was the idea of HOPE as a leadership metric.

In a time of economic uncertainty, skills disruption, and rapid technological advancement, employees don’t just need strategies. They need HOPE. Not blind optimism.

HOPE combined with ACTION.

The organizations that will flourish over the next decade will be those that can answer these Q’s:

What’s working? What are our strengths? What miracle(s) are we HOPING for?

As HR leaders, our role is not to have all the answers. It’s to create the conditions where people can imagine, contribute, and grow. We had a REAL conversation facilitated by Greg Smith (He/Him) & Anna Petosa (she/her) on creating SAFE-BRAVE-SPACES: Continue Learning & Unlearning & Learning! Turn Crunchy into Curiosity!

My biggest AI takeaway? Thanks to AI “Guru”Strategist: Amber Mac

Technology is a magical tool for human-centered progress — but only if we lead responsibly. 3 priorities stood out:

1️⃣ Recognize the Risks

Increase AI literacy, understand who is most impacted, and keep humans firmly “above-the-loop”.

2️⃣ Realize the Rewards

AI is already transforming work by eliminating dull, dirty, and dangerous tasks. This is our opportunity to reclaim HR’s strategic seat and focus more on people, culture, and capability building.

3️⃣ Embrace Readiness

Invest in skills, not just tools. Be radically transparent. Build confidence before compliance.

The future won’t be predictable. Perhaps the most important leadership capability will be learning to thrive in what one speaker called “predictable unpredictability.”

As we navigate AI, workforce transformation, and changing employee expectations, I believe HR has an unprecedented opportunity to shape what comes next. Not by replacing people with technology. But by using technology to help people thrive.

The future of work is a HUMAN conversation. I felt truly blessed to connect with amazing people at this event too: Adri Britz, Debra Hall, Robin, Alexander Jolink, CHRP, Laura Lee-Blake 🫶
