The Work May Continue Without You.
But Will the Value Remain the Same?
An important lesson in leadership, talent management, and the true value of people.
"The work doesn't stop for anyone."
This is one of the worst statements I have repeatedly heard throughout my career.
Not because the business cannot continue without a particular employee, but because this phrase is often used as if employees and their organizations are in a constant competition—and as if leaving a company means the person never mattered.
After more than two decades in the elevator industry, I have learned that business continuity and employee value are two completely different things.
A football comparison recently reminded me of this idea.
But the real question is:
Will the work be delivered with the same quality, efficiency, cost control, speed, experience, and spirit?
That is where leadership makes a difference.
