Safety Gear – The Device Designed for the One Moment That Matters Most.
An elevator may complete millions of safe journeys without the Safety Gear ever being activated.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
Unlike the service brake, the Safety Gear is not designed for normal operation. It is a certified mechanical safety component, installed on the car frame, whose sole purpose is to stop and hold the elevator car on the guide rails after activation by the Overspeed Governor under abnormal operating conditions.
How does it work?
The entire process is purely mechanical:
✔ The Overspeed Governor continuously monitors the elevator speed.
✔ If the car reaches the governor’s tripping speed, the governor locks the Governor Rope.
✔ The governor rope actuates the Safety Gear linkage.
✔ The Safety Gear grips both Guide Rails.
✔ The elevator car is brought to a controlled stop and securely retained on the guide rails.
No software.
No electronic commands.
Just a proven mechanical safety system designed to perform when it matters most.
More Than a Single Component
The Safety Gear should never be considered in isolation.
Its performance depends on the integrity of the complete safety chain:
• Overspeed Governor
• Governor Rope
• Linkage Mechanism
• Safety Gear
• Guide Rails
• Car Frame
A single installation error, improper adjustment, poor guide rail alignment, or inadequate commissioning can compromise the performance of the entire safety system.
International Standards
The design, testing, and certification of Safety Gear are governed by internationally recognized standards, including:
• EN 81-20 – Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts.
• EN 81-50 – Design rules, calculations, examinations, and type testing of lift safety components.
• ASME A17.1 / CSA B44 – Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators.
These standards require Safety Gear to be type-tested and certified before being approved for service.
Passengers may never see the Safety Gear.
But every engineer should understand that one day, it may become the most important component in the entire elevator system.
