ONE EMAIL. ONE MEETING. ONE LESSON IN LEADERSHIP ALIGNMENT
In 2019, I joined Hitachi Building Systems as Marketing Manager in PT Hitachi Asia Indonesia
New organization.
New portfolio.
New growth expectations.
Rather than waiting for inbound opportunities, I reconnected with key decision makers I had met in previous professional interactions.
One afternoon, I sent a short email to a Director I had met once before.
Thirty minutes later, his secretary replied.
He wanted to meet that same evening.
I attended the meeting alone, as my Japanese GM, Yoshinari Atsumi had another commitment that day.
The discussion was warm and constructive. Before it ended, the Director made a direct request:
“Please arrange an introduction meeting with your GM.”
That moment reinforced something important:
Leadership credibility matters at executive level.
I arranged the meeting shortly after.
When Atsumi-san joined the discussion, he brought something powerful to the room. Calm confidence. Transparency. No overpromising. A sincere commitment to long-term partnership.
His authenticity and full support throughout the tender process gave us strong positioning at executive level.
From that point forward, the dynamic shifted.
We were formally invited to participate in the tender. It was long, highly competitive, and commercially tight. Several global competitors were involved.
Throughout the process, I was fully trusted to lead the commercial and technical coordination. At the same time, I knew I had strong leadership backing behind me.
Eventually, we secured the project.
Looking back, the turning point was not the email.
It was leadership alignment and mutual trust.
That experience reinforced several principles I continue to apply:
• Reputation opens the first door.
• Executive trust is built through authenticity and consistency.
• Strong leadership support empowers teams to perform confidently.
• Major wins are rarely individual achievements.
In complex B2B environments, alignment at leadership level often determines the outcome long before the final negotiation.
