Hong Kong and Singapore have been making two seemingly unrelated moves recently: building gold-trading infrastructure and offering better tax incentives to attract fund managers.
I suspect they are actually part of the same strategy:
💡 Financial center ecosystem building.
Hong Kong and Singapore seem to have reached the same conclusion: if you want the money, attract the people who manage it, then give both the people and the money reasons to stay.
Gold is a good example.
If investors can trade gold locally, store it locally, and settle transactions locally, more of the activity around that wealth stays local too.
The same logic applies to fund managers. Attract the people making investment decisions, and the capital, funds, professional services, and supporting businesses are more likely to follow.
Both cities want the same thing:
💡 A bigger share of Asia’s wealth management value chain.
And that means competing for more than capital. They are building an entire ecosystem around it.
