Few buildings demonstrate the power of architectural identity quite like the Chrysler Building.

Designed at the height of Manhattan’s late 1920’s skyscraper boom, the tower combined advanced steel frame construction with craftsmanship, luxury materials and ornament inspired by the emerging automobile age.

The project began as the proposed Reynolds Building for property developer William H. Reynolds. Walter P. Chrysler took control of the development in October 1928 and worked directly with architect William Van Alen to transform it into a personal monument to industry, engineering and progress. Although associated with the Chrysler name, the building was personally financed by Walter Chrysler rather than constructed as Chrysler Corporation’s corporate headquarters.

Construction progressed at extraordinary speed. The foundations extended approximately 69 feet below Lexington Avenue, and the final structural steel was placed on 28 September 1929. The first tenants entered on 1 April 1930, with the formal opening taking place on 27 May 1930.

Its greatest engineering surprise was the 185 foot spire. Fabricated in sections and assembled within the upper part of the building, it was raised through the centre of the tower and secured in approximately 90 minutes. This brought the building’s total height to 1,046 feet, allowing it to overtake 40 Wall Street and become the world’s tallest building.

The title lasted less than a year, but the design has endured for almost a century.
