*From the Gautrain to Executive Leadership: Lessons in Governance, Accountability and Trust*
Every day, thousands of passengers board the Gautrain with confidence that the infrastructure supporting their journey will operate safely, reliably and without disruption.
During a defining chapter of my career, I served as a Lift & Escalator Inspector at Bombela Operating Company (BOC), the operator and maintainer of the Gautrain rapid rail system. In that role, passenger trust was not merely an expectation. It was a responsibility.
The Gautrain operates within a highly regulated, safety-critical environment where every asset must perform as intended and every decision must place safety, reliability and compliance first.
My experience at BOC taught me that effective governance extends far beyond policies and compliance frameworks. It is demonstrated through disciplined execution, informed oversight, proactive risk management and clear accountability, especially when complex systems operate under pressure.
Working on one of South Africa's most significant public infrastructure projects profoundly shaped my approach to leadership, governance, asset management, safety and operational excellence.
It reinforced a principle that continues to guide me today:
