Elevator Safety Is Not a Shortcut – Lives Travel With Every Ride
These images are not just of burnt PCBs. They are a reminder of what can happen when safety is ignored in the field.
The PCB shown in these images was damaged because a fuse was bypassed with a wire after the original fuse had blown. Someone chose a shortcut instead of identifying and rectifying the actual fault. What may have seemed like a quick solution could have resulted in a major accident.
In the Elevator & Escalator industry, shortcuts are never worth the risk.
As a Troubleshooting Engineer, I have seen many unsafe practices on site:
• Bypassing fuses with wires or unauthorized jumpers.
• Defeating safety circuits to make an elevator run temporarily.
• Using improper tools and components.
• Performing unsafe repairs under customer pressure or time constraints.
• Ignoring recommended maintenance practices.
These practices are dangerous—not only for the equipment but for everyone who uses it.
Always remember:
An elevator or escalator is not just a machine. It is a machine that transports human lives.
When you work on an elevator, you are not simply repairing a PCB or replacing a component. You are working on a transportation system that thousands of people trust every day.
Every technician, engineer, supervisor, and manager has a responsibility to ensure that:
• Only approved components are used.
• Safety circuits are never bypassed.
• Proper troubleshooting procedures are followed.
• Correct tools and test equipment are used.
• Unsafe temporary fixes are strictly prohibited.
• Maintenance recommendations are taken seriously.
I would also like to request building owners, facility managers, and customers:
• Please cooperate with service engineers and technicians.
• Provide adequate time for maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Do not pressure engineers to "make it work somehow."
• If an elevator needs to be shut down for safe repairs, allow it to remain out of service until it is properly repaired.
A non-working elevator is inconvenient. An unsafe elevator is dangerous.
Safety should never be compromised for convenience, time, or cost.
