Your Best People Are Watching

The chicken got promoted. The fish resigned.
Six months later, management asked:
“Why is nothing getting done?”
The answer often begins months earlier, when visibility was rewarded more than value.
🐔 The highly visible employee speaks in every meeting, copies large groups on emails, attends every alignment call, and makes sure no contribution goes unnoticed.
🐟 The quiet performer solves difficult problems, supports colleagues, improves the process, and delivers dependable results without constantly advertising the work.
At appraisal time, the visible employee is easier to remember.
But easier to remember does not always mean more valuable.
This is a common leadership blind spot: confusing communication volume with contribution.
Meetings can support performance, but meetings are not performance.
Emails can coordinate work, but emails are not completed work.
Being busy can create movement, but movement is not necessarily progress.
A stronger performance system evaluates evidence over time:
🎯 What measurable outcomes improved?
🛠️ What problems were permanently solved?
📉 What waste, risk, delay, or variation was reduced?
🤝 Who strengthened the capability of the team?
👥 Who shared credit and helped others perform?
🔄 Who made the process more stable and repeatable?
Leaders should also remember that not every valuable employee is naturally self-promotional. Some people assume that good work will be noticed. When it is not, they may not complain loudly or campaign for recognition.
They disengage quietly.
Then they leave quietly.
And only after their departure does the organization discover how many problems they were preventing, how much knowledge they carried, and how much work they completed without creating noise around it.
The lesson is not to ignore confident communicators. Strong communication is valuable.
The lesson is to build a system in which communication supports results rather than substitutes for them.
👀 Go to the workplace and observe the work.
📊 Review trends, not isolated impressions.
🗣️ Create space for quieter employees to contribute.
🏆 Recognize problem-solving, teamwork, and sustained improvement.
⚖️ Evaluate both results and the behaviours used to achieve them.
Your best performers are watching what gets rewarded.
When organizations reward attention-seeking, they create more attention-seeking.
When they reward problem-solving, collaboration, and measurable results, they create a stronger culture.
Do not wait until the fish resigns to discover who was keeping the operation moving.
