Have you ever found yourself doing this: jabbing a lift button once, twice, maybe three times, and nothing seems to happen?
There are a few common reasons a lift might be slow to respond: your call may be queued behind other requests, the button may not have been pressed firmly enough, or the internal electrical contacts may have worn down over time. Whatever the cause, it's an experience that quickly tests a passenger's patience.
What many people don't appreciate is just how much punishment lift buttons take. In a busy building, a single button, such as the ground floor call button, can be pressed several hundred times a day. That kind of sustained use means that lift buttons need to be both highly durable, reliable and tactile, especially on the floors that see the most traffic.
When a button becomes unresponsive, and the issue is reported to us, how we handle it depends on your maintenance agreement. Customers on a fully comprehensive contract with us will have the faulty button replaced with a new, fully compliant one as a matter of course. For those on other contract types, your local Liftec Express engineer will flag the issue to our admin team, who will then get in touch to walk you through the available options.
The good news is that lift buttons rarely fail outright: first, they tend to become gradually unreliable, which gives you the opportunity to report the problem and also gives us the time to address it at the next scheduled service visit, well before a complete failure occurs.
If you are thinking about the effectiveness of the buttons in your lift car’s operating panel, something to consider is compliance with the relevant accessibility legislation, which includes EN 81-70 that requires the button to provide clear feedback – either visual, audible, or tactile to assist users with visual impairments.
