One of the more intriguing M&A stories I've seen recently involves Hong Kong food delivery. Uber Eats left Hong Kong in 2021 after struggling to gain meaningful market share. Now, five years later, Uber is trying to acquire Delivery Hero, the parent company of Foodpanda. If the deal completes, Uber would effectively return to Hong Kong... by owning the company that once beat it. Sometimes the cheapest market-entry strategy is simply admitting someone else did the local work better. But that's only the beginning. The real story is what happens next.

Hong Kong could become one of the most interesting competitive battlegrounds in Asia:

🟢 Uber (through Foodpanda)

🟡 Keeta (backed by Meituan)

These are two companies with very different strengths.

Uber has built a global ecosystem around mobility, food delivery, memberships, and payments. Around the world, millions of users already have an Uber account.

Keeta, on the other hand, brings something equally formidable: Meituan's delivery engine. Order dispatch, courier utilization, merchant operations, and execution are areas where Meituan has spent years building expertise.

I'm not sure this battle will be won by whoever offers the biggest discounts.

I suspect it will come down to two very different strategies:

🍝 Can Uber persuade customers that one ecosystem for rides and food is more convenient?

🍜 Or will Meituan's operational excellence prove to be the stronger advantage?

Either way, Hong Kong may become a fascinating case study for anyone interested in strategy, ecosystems, and competition.
