Data Centers: The New Competition Is About Speed, Not Just Scale

Last week, I shared my perspective that Southeast Asia's data center boom is not merely a technology story, but a critical infrastructure story.
This week, an article from The Economist highlighted a challenge facing the UK that should resonate with policymakers and investors everywhere.
The UK currently has around 2GW of data center capacity and aims to reach 6GW by 2030, yet one of the biggest obstacles is not funding or demand, but power infrastructure. According to Microsoft UK, a data center can be built in 18 months, while securing a grid connection can take up to eight years.
This is a powerful reminder that in the AI era, competitive advantage is increasingly determined by speed of execution.
The same dynamic is playing out across Southeast Asia.
Malaysia has emerged as one of the region's fastest-growing data center markets. Johor alone has attracted multiple hyperscale investments and is projected to exceed 1GW of operational capacity, supported by a development pipeline measured in multiple gigawatts. Some industry forecasts suggest Johor could eventually rival or surpass Singapore in total capacity.
Across Asia-Pacific, nearly 13GW of new data center projects were announced in the first half of 2025, representing a 160% increase year-on-year, underscoring the scale of demand driven by AI and cloud computing.
However, history suggests that attracting investment is only the beginning.
The real questions are:
✅ Can power be delivered quickly?
✅ Can grid connections keep pace with demand?
✅ Can permitting processes support rapid deployment?
✅ Can markets develop sufficient engineering and operational talent?
As AI adoption accelerates, countries will not compete solely on land, incentives, or connectivity. They will compete on their ability to build infrastructure faster, more sustainably, and more predictably than their peers.
In my view, the winners of the next decade may not be the largest markets, but those that combine speed, power availability, policy clarity, sustainability, and talent development.
