How fast can an elevator really go?
For a while, the answer could be found inside Shanghai Tower.
At 632 meters tall, Shanghai Tower is one of the tallest buildings on Earth—and Mitsubishi Electric supplied an extraordinary elevator system for it.
Mitsubishi delivered 114 elevators to the tower, including:
🔹 Ultra-high-speed observation-deck elevators
🔹 High-speed passenger elevators
🔹 Double-deck elevators
🔹 Emergency-use elevators
One of the observation elevators was upgraded to travel at 1,230 meters per minute—20.5 meters per second, earning recognition at the time as the world's fastest elevator.
That's roughly 46 miles per hour... vertically.
But high-speed elevator engineering isn't simply about going faster.
Engineers also have to manage:
