I remember once attending a construction site and being given a pink high vis vest “to differentiate from contractors and visitors to site”. There was one pink high vis and it was given to the woman, every other male visitor had the correct PPE. While probably a well meaning and lighthearted gesture this isn’t inclusion, quite the opposite actually.
It's National Inclusion Week (14th to 20th September), and I want to talk about one of the subjects I’m really passionate about and something that’s still an issue: PPE that doesn't actually fit the person wearing it 💚
Ill-fitting PPE means less protection, more discomfort and a quiet message that you weren't really thought about.
And, it's not just a woman's issue. We all come in different shapes, sizes and needs. PPE Kit was built around a "default" worker who doesn't reflect the entire workforce.
Inclusion isn't separate from safety, it is safety. PPE kit that fits properly means people feel protected, confident and are able to do their best work. Better for productivity and wellbeing too!
When PPE fits everyone properly, it's not just about ticking a compliance box. It says every person here matters, deserves dignity and deserves to be safe.
