Shanghai Tower is China's tallest completed building and the world's third tallest, demonstrating what can be achieved when architecture, engineering and construction technology come together.
Designed by Gensler, this extraordinary skyscraper twists approximately 120 degrees as it rises above Shanghai's financial district.
🏗️ ENGINEERING
Construction began in 2008, with the building completed in 2015.
Its distinctive twisting geometry isn't simply architectural. Extensive wind tunnel testing helped optimise it’s aerodynamic performance, reducing structural wind loads by approximately 24%.
The structural system incorporates a reinforced concrete core, supercolumns and outrigger trusses.
A double skin glass façade encloses spectacular sky gardens, creating vertical neighbourhoods throughout the tower.
🛗 VERTICAL TRANSPORTATION
Mitsubishi Electric delivered one of the world's most remarkable elevator installations.
The system includes:
• 114 elevators
• 20 double deck elevators
• Observation deck elevators reaching 73.8 km/h
• An emergency elevator travelling 578.55 metres
• Regenerative technology to improve energy efficiency
The installation achieved multiple Guinness World Records titles in 2016.
Imagine travelling vertically at almost 74 km/h!
