Why don't elevators fall even if the rope or belt breaks?
Modern elevators are designed with multiple independent safety systems. They do not rely on a single rope or belt. Even in the extremely unlikely event of a complete suspension failure, several devices work together to prevent the car from free-falling.
1. Multiple Steel Ropes (First Line of Protection)

❇️If one rope is damaged, the remaining ropes continue to safely support the elevator.

❇️A rotating pulley connected to a governor rope monitors elevator speed.
❇️If the elevator exceeds about 115–140% of its rated speed, the governor locks.
❇️This action activates the safety gear, which grips the guide rails and stops the car.
4. Guide Rails
*️⃣Strong steel rails fixed inside the elevator shaft.
*️⃣They guide the elevator smoothly.
*️⃣During an emergency, the safety gear grips these rails to stop the car.
5. Buffers
❇️Installed in the elevator pit at the bottom of the shaft.
❇️Usually hydraulic or spring-type.
❇️If the elevator reaches the bottom unexpectedly, buffers absorb the impact and reduce the force.
6. Electromagnetic Brake

*️⃣When power is removed or an emergency occurs, powerful springs automatically apply the brake.
*️⃣This prevents the elevator from moving unintentionally.
7. Rope Monitoring System
❇️Detects rope wear, slack, or imbalance.
